WHO WAS DR. MINORU SHIROTA?

Dr. Minoru Shirota (1899–1982) was a Japanese microbiologist and medical doctor who devoted his life to preventive healthcare. While studying at Kyoto Imperial University, he became deeply interested in improving public health through nutrition and gut science.

A VISION ROOTED IN PREVENTIVE MEDICINE

In the 1930s, Japan faced widespread health challenges, especially among children. Dr. Shirota believed that a strong digestive system held the key to overall wellness. He was determined to make health-enhancing products affordable and accessible to all.

THE BIRTH OF LACTICASEIBACILLUS PARACASEI STRAIN SHIROTA

As part of his research, he discovered that lactic acid bacteria suppress harmful bacteria in the intestines. In 1930, he succeeded in strengthening and culturing a strain of lactic acid bacteria that could survive digestive juices such as gastric fluid and bile, reach the intestines alive, and produce beneficial effects. This strain is now known as Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota.

THE LAUNCH OF YAKULT (1935)

In 1935, Dr. Shirota created the first bottles of Yakult, a fermented probiotic milk drink enriched with the beneficial Shirota strain. His goal was simple yet revolutionary: “To contribute to the health and happiness of people around the world.”
